I met jon on April 3rd 1997. I was about to graduate from college in 1 month. I had pretty much prayed the entire time I was in college that God would give me a husband….or at least a long term relationship. I tried to force a couple of relationships, but they just didn’t ever work out right. I had dumped a boy on the day before Valentines that year, b/c I knew it wasn’t the right thing….and then I pierced my nose….on my own….for the 2nd time. 6 weeks later I met Jon.
I had been praying specifically for a boy that was friends with my friend Flynn. He had a lot of hip hop connections, and you know…..black and hispanic guys tend to like da booty, and I had da booty, and they loved Jesus so one of Flynn’s friends would be perfect, in my humble opion God:) And here is how our story began:
*******************************************************************
Once upon a time there was a boy from Indiana (we’ll call him Jon). He was a geek and a hip hop head…unlikely but true. He came to the BIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIG city of LA to visit his friend Flynn. He saw a picture of this fly honey smoking a fat cigar (nasty, we know) He decided he could overlook that part b/c she WAS a fly honey with red lips and spaHHHHkkaly eyes that were winking at him. He asked his friend if they could meet this girl and her friends. Flynn made the calls and they were off. The fly honey (we’ll call her Joy) was working in LA and her house was in Orange County. She was working a LATE shift, and had to drop her friend off WAY the heck out in the valley, but her friends had called and told her that there was a boy that wanted to meet her. Immediately she panicked. The whole way home she panicked! The trip home took 2 hours! She was panicking for 2 hours. She dropped a drink on her lap.
OH MY GOODNESS!!! She dropped a drink in the middle of her lap. She got home and called her friend to come to the door. Her friend saw her trouble and proceeded to shield her from view when the cute but geeky hip hop head started coming out TAKING PICTURES of them! Pictures….can you imagine that? The fly honey (not so fly with dt. coke all over her lap) had to HOP in her bedroom window! (Thank God for a ground floor bedroom) and change clothes. Okay, back to fly. The geeky hip hop boy kept taking pictures….he took pictures of her, he took pictures of her feet….HER FEET? This was the first time they met. They had things in common, weight loss, computer geekiness, love for hip hop….but he took pictures of her feet, and she just couldn’t get past the panicking!!! Her ears were still buzzing with the panic. So that fly honey took herself to bed….and the cute yet geeky hip hop head talked to her friend till 2 in the morning and left thinking he liked fly honey’s fly friend a lot better than fly honey:(
Ah…..but all is not lost. Fly honey’s friend flynn had forwarded her all of cute yet geeky hip hop boy’s vital information….including a link to his blog….yes a blog before they were cool in 1997. He talked about life, and Jesus, and hip hop and his weight loss saga and computers….how perfectly cute yet geeky yet hip hop of him!!! It immediately grabbed her attention. She had stopped panicking, and thought for about 30 seconds before she emailed him an appology for her behavior and a lengthy getting to know you email. Fly honey just knew that this was the guy for her…..weird yet true. Cute yet geeky wrote her back when he got home to Indiana and pretty soon their emails were running hot and heavy through the Notre Dame to SCC internet waves. Not that kind of hot and heavy folks….just a LOT of them. Soon they started talking on the phone and then they made plans to meet each other again. Fly Honey had to go back to Virginia, which seemed like a much better place to visit from than LA. The flight was only 2 hours instead of 3 1/2. Cute yet Geeky came back to LA. They had a fun filled couple of days, and then they loaded up Fly Honey’s Ford Escort Station Wagon and drove from California to Indianapolis…..and the rest is history.
*********************************************************************
Jon and I visited back and forth every month from August till April again. In April we were engaged at the Lincoln Memorial in D.C…..which is my favorite place in D.C. and without Lincoln and Martin Luther King (there is a memorial set up in the basement for the Civil rights movement) we would never be a couple. We were married July 4th 1998 and the rest is truly history:)

that is such a hip hop happy fly honey history lesson! WOW! thanks for sharing – love hearing about people’s love stories!
totally had hairdo #1, 2, 3 and #4 the color, but way short and spikey. wanted #5 and 8 (I have super naturally curly hair). And currently have something like #7. And I actually had my lip done, but not my nose.

That is the cutest story! And I can totally empathize with the nose piercing…doing it yourself…two times…with a safety pin???
OHHH–I remember that night like it was yesterday. Time sure does fly!! I remember you climbing through the window and I knew how completely nervous you were. Three kids later–I’m sure the nerves are gone :0) you know what I mean–miz
